Erik ten Hag’s response is clear as Manchester United’s leadership warns the manager about his “underwhelming” playstyle.

The Reds have struggled at the start of the season, securing just one Premier League victory in their first three games.

A 3-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool came after a last-minute loss to Brighton last weekend, and while the opening win against Fulham showed promise, Erik ten Hag’s side must improve their approach.

New reports from The Guardian has claimed that the INEOS-led football department have viewed the style of play so far this season as “underwhelming”.

It was also explained that while they recognise the problems with injuries and the need to get the new signings into the team, there are serious concerns about how the manager sets up the team.

Dan Ashworth and Omar Berrada publicly supported Ten Hag last weekend, but the Old Trafford leadership is expecting his team to show that they can dominate games and opponents.

It is clear that while Ten Hag is not walking a tightrope yet, he will be if the team’s performances and results do not improve quickly.

Speaking to the media in the aftermath of the 3-0 defeat against Liverpool, he explained his confidence about turning things around once more players are up to speed.

“Again, we have to build a new team,” Ten Hag said. “I explained this so many times, also on the Friday in the press conference.

“We will build this new team. We have young players. Also, now, we have players to build in the season. Today, I think we had two players, three players, and the first start of the season, and they didn’t play for 90 minutes.”

“We will be fine, but it’s clear we have to improve. But in the end of the season, I’m quite confident, again, we will have a big chance to lift another trophy.”

While the Dutchman’s ability to succeed in cup competitions is unquestionable, INEOS will pay much more attention to how his team performs.

The international break provides players with more game time with their national teams or time on the training pitch at Carrington. Either way, Ten Hag will have fewer excuses once club football returns.
