Erik ten Hag urges Man United star to build on positive Fenerbahce performance
Erik ten Hag has urged one Manchester United star to build on his positive performance against Fenerbahce on Thursday evening.
Manchester United left Turkey with a point from their Europa League clash against Fenerbahce on Thursday, extending their disappointing European form.
Erik ten Hag’s side has now gone nine European games without a win over the past year and will shift their focus back to the Premier League.
Currently sitting 12th in the league after a recent win over Brentford, the Reds are looking to gain momentum with a favourable upcoming match against West Ham.
Ten Hag will need his players to show impressive levels against The Hammers and is hoping that Manuel Ugarte manages to build on his performance.
Ten Hag urges Ugarte to build on performance
Ugarte started the game in Turkey slowly and almost gave the opposition a golden chance with a dangerous header back to André Onana in the opening minutes.
However, the new midfield signing grew into the game and kickstarted the move for United’s goal. He tackled former Reds midfielder Fred before playing the ball forward to launch the attack.
Ugarte then made a goal-saving tackle inside United’s box before continuing a solid level throughout the rest of the game.
“You have to integrate [players]. He came late in in the window and then we had to integrate him during the competitions, and that takes time,” explained Ten Hag after the game.
“We have to stay patient but, as you see, if the quality in that position is not right it’s very difficult for a team to control games, and then I don’t even speak about dominating games.
“So, that [No 6] position needs one who brings the quality all the time, and we have to integrate him now in this team.
“As I said, I’m pleased with his performance today and from here on he can build up.”
The Uruguayan will hope to start for the first time in the Premier League since the team’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last month.
