Erik ten Hag has asked for his players to “show more personality” to improve away form against big clubs this season.

Manchester United suffered embarrassing defeats on their travels to Brentford, Manchester City, and Liverpool last season. Despite boasting an impressive home record, Ten Hag’s men were troubled a lot in their away games against the big clubs.

Erik ten Hag’s men travel to North London as they take on Tottenham Hotspur at their stadium on Saturday evening. The Reds relied on a second-half goal from Raphael Varane as they nervously managed to beat Wolves in the first gameweek.

While speaking to the club media ahead of United’s clash with Spurs, United’s Dutch manager said that the players must show personality on the pitch as one of their targets is to improve their away record.

“This is one of the aims we have for this season, that we have to step up in away games to get more points. So, it’s often to do with personality.

“So yeah, that’s the demand from me on the players, and that we have to show more personality on the pitch to win such games.

The former Ajax manager also maintained that the players are not distracted by the ongoing saga involving the potential return of Mason Greenwood. Ten Hag stated that the team is focused on Spurs, but he also admitted that the team’s overall performance against Wolves was not up to the mark.

“We focus on way of play, we focus on team performance. And so, we’re focusing now on Tottenham Hotspur. We know the performance (against Wolves) was not what we hoped.

“But we want (to win) and it showed the character and the personality and that is one of the things we had to step up in, according to last season.”

Tottenham Hotspur drew to Brentford last week and will host Manchester United in their first home match of the season.
