Erik ten Hag has spoken for the first time since Manchester United issued Marcus Rashford’s punishment for his trip to Belfast.

Marcus Rashford was spotted in a nightclub in Belfast just hours before he then reported ill for training on Friday morning, resulting in the player being barred from appearing against Newport County on Sunday afternoon.

It has been the majority of headlines across the last week at Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag having been pressed for comment on Wednesday afternoon.

It has been reported that Rashford will face a fine of around £650,000, which is approximately two weeks’ wages for the player, but that he has taken responsibility for his actions.

“He has taken responsibility, and for the rest, it’s an internal matter. Case closed,” Ten Hag told reports on Wednesday.

Further asked if Rashford’s actions show a lack of respect, and he said: “It’s nothing to do with that, but as I said, let’s focus on the game; let’s move on. The statement is clear and we have to focus on winning football games.”

He continued: “In football, you need discipline and that is on the pitch but also off the pitch. There is a line between, when every player, every professional knows this, what is required. We have to focus on winning football games and that’s well that matters and every top professional knows what is required.”

Marcus Rashford will be available for selection once again as United prepare to face Wolves on Thursday evening.
