Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been slammed by several fans for stating that his side “showed big character” in their 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

After his side were well off the pace at home against a bottom half of the Premier League table side in Fulham, Ten Hag would still state that he believed United’s equaliser in the contest was a “deserved” one.

United, who allowed goalkeeper Andre Onana to concede 17 shots, failed to ever show any signs of scoring themselves for large portions of the contest, with their eventual goal coming from an unexpected source in Harry Maguire.

Maguire, who scored in the 89th minute, would have his equaliser ruled null and void as Fulham’s Alex Iwobi would score a winning goal for the London side in the 7th minute of stoppage time.

With many believing Fulham’s victory was a justified one, Ten Hag was one of the few who did not see it that way, instead believing that his United side showed “big character” throughout the contest:

“The team showed big character to fight back,” Stated Ten Hag. “We deserved the equaliser and went for the win – we showed big personality and character. It was that mistake. Before that, we went for the win and we should have taken our opportunities.

“We struggled with their influence and their impact on our left side. But we reacted well and how to deal with it, how to step up from the back and once we had that we got more from the game and took control to create the chances.

“With the squad we had today we should have won this game. Both halves were slow starts and we should be ready from the first whistle. That’s a point of criticism but the team showed big character in both halves.”

Despite Ten Hag being adamant that United “showed big character”, as well as stating that, “You have to see the bigger picture. The bigger picture looks very good…” few would agree, with one United fan retweeting his comment with the caption: “Oh DOES IT ERIK. DOES IT REALLY”

Meanwhile, others would question if that “picture” would include Ten Hag in it at all, with one writing, “And in the bigger picture Ten Hag isn’t there so it looks good.”
