Erik ten Hag has revealed why one Manchester United star has underperformed for the club this season.

The Reds have been underwhelming as a team throughout the course of this campaign and the FA Cup is the last chance of salvaging success from the season.

During Ten Hag’s first campaign in charge the team finished third in the Premier League, won the Carabao Cup and reached the final of the FA Cup. It was a large success for his first season at the club.

However, many players have underperformed this season. Marcus Rashford has only scored eight times after hitting 30 across all competitions last term.

Casemiro is another player who was crucial to the team last season after his move from Real Madrid.

“I think we needed the six when I arrived here and last season. Casemiro was fantastic,” Ten Hag told reporters this Friday. “I don’t think he ever scored so many goals as well but as a six, a holding midfielder, a strategist, he was so important for the team.”

However, the Brazilian midfielder has found major difficulties this term, both in his consistency and quality.

His passing has been more wayward but more worryingly has been the amount of mistimed tackles or interceptions he has attempted, even with the poor structure that seems to be at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag believes that it has been the injury Casemiro sustained that has impacted his season. But the manager is confident that the midfielder will turn things around.

“This season he struggled with a bad injury he never had in his career,” explained the United boss.

“But he always win in his career, everywhere he was, there will be success. I trust he will give his success and I know he will need games, he will be better and I’m very confident about him, he is a fighter, why he also won big trophies and he’s a very important player.”
