Erik ten Hag has revealed what he told Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo at full-time following their FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

United scored two first-half goals at Wembley to secure the FA Cup for the first time since 2016.

Garnacho became the first teenager to score in an FA Cup final since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004 when he opened the scoring after 30 minutes. The Argentine took advantage of a defensive error from City to give United the lead.

Mainoo then doubled the advantage with a smart finish at the end of a perfect move from The Reds. Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Garnacho were all involved in the build-up.

It was typical that two academy graduates grabbed the goals for United in this historic win. Ten Hag has experienced major difficulties at Old Trafford but deserves credit for his role in both of their developments.

TV cameras picked up the manager and the two youngsters having a touching conversation after the full-time whistle was blown.

When asked by ITV what he told the teenagers at that moment, Ten Hag explained that he reminded them to remember what winning the FA Cup feels like.

“We work so hard, they work so hard, and the staff did an incredible job, the academy, don’t forget them. But all the coaches from under 21, and all our coaches, they work so hard to develop them,” he began.

“But at the end of the day, they have to do it, and I say, ‘hey, remember this feeling’.

“And I said to Kobbie Mainoo last season when we won the Carabao Cup, make sure that next season you are on the pitch and celebrating because this is the best feeling you can have, winning a cup, an FA Cup is really huge, that is absolutely true.”
