Erik ten Hag has offered a positive injury update on Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

The Reds open up their Premier League campaign against Wolves on Monday evening and they will be without new signing Rasmus Hojlund.

The young striker has a back problem that will keep him out for a short period but that means United remain light in the striker position.

Ten Hag, however, has explained that he is ‘calm’ about the fact his new man will have a delayed debut.

This is not only because star man Marcus Rashford can play centrally, or even that Jadon Sancho has excelled centrally in pre-season, but also because Anthony Martial is available for selection.

“I’m quite calm and composed in this situation,” explained Ten Hag. “Because Rashy is very good as a striker – we have seen it last Saturday.

“Anthony Martial is available as well. Jadon Sancho can play there as well – he did it in pre-season very well. The squad can deal with it, as I already said. There is a strategy behind it.”

The Frenchman joined the squad on the summer tour of the United States but did not play in a single game.

His fitness levels have been a concern ever since Ten Hag came into the building. His latest injury kept him out of the FA Cup Final in May.

Journalists even followed up on the comment from the manager to confirm that Martial was ready to play, and Ten Hag reiterated his confidence.

It seems unlikely that the 27-year-old will be thrown into the starting XI after months out, but he could be a valuable to come from the bench.

Wolves have recently swapped managers after Julian Lopetegui left the club. Former Bournemouth manager Gary O’Neil has taken over.
