Erik ten Hag delivered the last on Mason Mount’s injury following Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

After securing a victory over Fulham on the opening day of the season, Manchester United suffered an unexpected setback when they lost to Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

The match began with both teams evenly matched, but it was Brighton who took the lead in the 30th minute when Danny Welbeck scored past Erik ten Hag’s defence. Marcus Rashford responded quickly with a goal, but it was disallowed for offside.

In the second half, Amad Diallo broke through and scored an equalizer, but Alejandro Garnacho’s subsequent goal was ruled out for offside, as the ball had brushed against Joshua Zirkzee before going into the net.

As the game neared its end, Joao Pedro found himself unmarked at the back post and headed in the decisive goal with only moments remaining on the clock.

While the focus will undoubtedly be on the loss, many were left wondering why Mason Mount was substituted at halftime despite looking like United’s best player on the pitch.

Mount came off ot make way for Joshua Zirkzee, who was making his second appearance as a Red Devil following his £36 million mobe from Bologna last month.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Ten Hag was asked if Mount coming off for Zirkzee was a tactical decision or one forced due to injury, to which he confirmed it was more of a precautionary move based on some previous problems.

“It was a decision, he had some problems, he had an issue, so we know the history of Mason, so there are four weeks to come out,” Ten Hag replied.

“But I think, also, Joshua is coming better in, we are losing the game, and I think he had a good impact in the game.”

Further, Ten Hag explained that he feels United created good chances in both the first and second halevs, and that they should have been winning at half-time.

“But I don’t think also before half time we created our chances, we had a good chance, so the best chance before half time.

“I think that was from Amad and was after the cross of Diogo [Dalot], and also after that Mason Mount had a very good chance, so I think before halftime we had three, four, I think, good opportunities, and from there two very good chances, and we should go winning at half time.”

The Dutchman critiqued his defence, explaining that if that was how they were planning to defend their goal, they would not succeed.

“If you protect the goal like we do, and then you drop points,” he said. “Football talks to us about details, as I say, so we have to do better in such occasions.”
