Erik ten Hag has explained his decision to bench Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat as Manchester United defeated Fulham in the Premier League.

Manchester United looked to right recent woes after back-to-back 3-0 losses against Manchester City and Newcastle at Old Trafford.

The club are in a horrible run of form, having lost eight of their opening 16 games across all competitions so far this season, and Erik ten Hag has a huge job to do to turn the ship around.

On Saturday afternoon, however, Bruno Fernandes provided the magic moment as his 90th-minute goal ensured United a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

For his team, Ten Hag decided to keep both Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat on the bench in favour of starting Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay, despite recent criticism of the latter two’s performances.

Speaking after the game, the Dutch manager explained that he made this decision due to the balance that McTominay and Eriksen provided along with Fernandes.

“I think this midfield today was well set up, Ten Hag explained. “There was a good balance between the three, also after Mason [Mount] came in, so that’s good.

“We need the players and I’m sure with this midfield balance, we can go on.”

The win over Fulham has seen United move to within five points of the Premier League top four.
