Erik ten Hag makes complete U-turn on signing Man Utd star he once called his ‘best player’

Erik ten Hag and his club Bayer Leverkusen have now decided against signing a certain Manchester United winger, with the club now set to move on to other targets despite their interest in the player.

Erik ten Hag has a reputation for signing former players, which was a common theme during his period at Manchester United, but he has reportedly now decided against signing a former United player of his this summer.

The player in question was given a debut in Europe by Erik ten Hag and was amongst his most used players during his reign at the club, even scoring a goal in the FA Cup final win that brought the coach his second trophy in two seasons.

Leverkusen had shown an interest in the player, who will leave Old Trafford this summer, in the last few weeks, but they are now pulling out of the race for the player as the cost is outside what they can afford at this moment.

Many may ask how Leverkusen cannot afford to pay a fee of close to £50m after it was confirmed today that they are expected to sign Florian Wirtz for a fee of around £116.5m, a British record.

Erik ten Hag decides against Garnacho signing

Bayer Leverkusen and Erik ten Hag will not be signing Alejandro Garnacho this summer, as it was revealed by Florian Plettenburg that the club are not pursuing a move for the player due to the overall cost of the deal.

Leverkusen feel the transfer fee and wages are outside of their reach at this moment in time. Garnacho is anticipated to cost around £50-60m this summer, with the player’s wage demands currently unknown to the public.

Erik ten Hag has already signed Mark Flekken this summer, and despite Garnacho being part of the internal list at the German club, it’s unlikely the Dutch coach will be reunited with the winger.

James McAtee from Manchester City is said to be someone Leverkusen will turn their attention to instead of Garnacho, with the English forward representing a more affordable option.

Erik ten Hag got the best out of Garnacho

Erik ten Hag and Alejandro Garnacho were like a match made in heaven at Manchester United, and the Dutch coach will be upset that he cannot bring the Argentine to Germany this season. At one stage during his time at United, ten Hag called Garnacho the best player in his team during a period of top consistency for the winger.

Garnacho is firmly thought to be leaving the club during this window, with a way back into the first team under Ruben Amroim extremely unlikely at this time. The signing of Matheus Cunha in that left ten position is also thought to be a replacement for the 20-year-old.

The relationship between the two seemed to collapse at the end of the season, particularly after Garnacho was left out of the Europa League final. Ruben Amorim reportedly told the player he can find another club in a training session in front of the rest of the team, and the club are backing the manager in the situation.

United should hold out for at least £50m for the player, as despite his form last season, he remains one of the most exciting young talents on the planet.
