Manchester United will be missing Lisandro Martínez for at least a month as Erik ten Hag issues the latest update surrounding the club’s injuries.

On Tuesday evening, Manchester United fans received a very unwelcome update as the club confirmed that Lisandro Martínez and Victor Lindelöf had both suffered injuries that would keep them out for at least a month.

“Manchester United centre-backs Victor Lindelöf and Lisandro Martínez will be out of action for at least a month due to muscle injuries,” a club statement said. “Sweden captain Lindelöf was withdrawn during the second half of last Saturday’s Premier League game against Brentford with a hamstring problem.

“Victor was replaced by Martinez after 69 minutes, as the Argentina international made his first appearance since early February. Unfortunately, Licha has now sustained a calf strain in training and is unavailable for the next few games.”

This means that both players will miss the upcoming tie against Chelsea. Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Ten Hag has addressed the club’s recent injuries.

“We have an idea but we will work on it,” Ten Hag said when asked why his side have suffered so many muscle injuries this season. “Internally, we will deal with it.”

He then refused to expand on what this idea is when prompted by journalists, simply saying “no”. Ten Hag has often been very cautious when explaining injuries during press conferences, so this is not a surprise.

“You can’t prevent, it’s not only us who’ve had this,” he continued. “The standards of the Premier League from an intensity perspective are so high, the overload of the schedule, international football is so huge, we have internationals in our squad.

“City, Liverpool and Newcastle have problems, many other teams. In this moment, especially the defensive department but the midfield and frontline the players are available.”

Fortunately, Ten Hag did also clarify that United have had three injury boosts ahead of the game against Chelsea.

“On the frontline and midfield, we are okay, and we have options there, but in the backline, we have a lack of options,” he said.

“But the good thing is back in training this afternoon is Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans. Yesterday Harry Maguire was back in training.”
