Erik ten Hag has explained why Mason Mount is on the bench as Manchester United travelled to defeat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Premier League.

Mason Mount, after a slow start to life at Manchester United, has started to find his feet under Erik ten Hag in the last five fixtures.

It has, therefore, come as a bit of a surprise that the Dutch manager named Mount on the bench for United’s return to domestic football as they face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Premier League.

In his place started Scott McTominay, who played hero last time out with two goals in injury time against Brentford as a substitute handed United a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford and scored at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening.

Speaking before the fixture, Ten Hag confirmed McTominay started ahead of Mount due to the Scotsman’s recent performances.

“Football is about competition. Scott [McTominay] played some very good games, but especially the last one,” he told MUTV.

“He is an example for all of us. He didn’t complain about being a substitute, he came in and scored two goals. That’s the attitude I expect.”

Manchester United ran out as 2-1 victors after McTominay and Diogo Dalot both scored fine efforts to bring 3 points back to Old Trafford.
