Erik ten Hag explains best advice from Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich ahead of Man United clash vs Man City
Erik ten Hag has explained the best thing that he learned under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Manchester City in the Premier League.
The two manager’s worked together whilst in Germany. Ten Hag was the reserves coach during Guardiola’s tenure with the Munich club.
With Saturday’s derby looming, the United manager was asked about his time with the opposition’s manager.
“There’s too much to tell,” laughed Ten Hag. “It’s a lot. It’s too short to bring in 30 seconds, to tell that.”
However, he was pushed to provide just one – the best – thing that he learned working with the Manchester City manager.
“Be proactive. Football is about results. Top football is about results. But you want to do it in a certain way, a way of proactive adventure and also entertain. Top football is about winning but also entertaining the fans.”
Both managers have the same broad idea: To win football games, while looking good doing it. That’s something that United supporters value highly.

Due to that fact, we could be provided with a spectacle on Saturday afternoon. There were nine goals in the last game between the teams, but this time around, hopefully, United will come out on the winning side.
“A lot,” replied Guardiola when asked if United have improved. “It’s normal, a new manager arrives and the improvement is clear. Not just results. I have the feeling every time at Old Trafford or the Etihad it’s been a difficult game.
“With Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] they were close. What happens in the previous seasons, I don’t know what happens. It’s normal United are there. Still there, fighting. Nobody said they would be there, they are there because they have to be. It doesn’t surprise me. It’s why this competition is so difficult.”
