Erik ten Hag disagrees with Antony over Man United vs Coventry celebration
In his press conference ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match against Sheffield United on Wednesday, Erik ten Hag reacted to Antony’s antics against Coventry City in the FA Cup.
Antony, 24, has been in horrific form so far this season scoring just twice in 34 appearances with both coming in the FA Cup. throughout his time at United Erik ten Hag has been one of the first to defend the winger, however, this is not the case with his most recent actions.
The 24-year-old came off the bench at Wembley on Sunday against Coventry City in the 66th minute to replace Alejandro Garnacho and didn’t have a large impact during his time on the pitch.
The No. 21 is in the headlines for his actions towards the Coventry players following The Reds victory in the penalty shootout, however.
As many of the United players – led by Harry Maguire – turned to console the side eighth in the Championship following Rasmus Højlund converting the winning penalty, Antony obnoxiously cupped his ears towards his opponents as they were silenced by the loss.
The Brazilian’s behaviour has been criticised by many fans on social media. Many ex-players, including former United captain Rio Ferdinand, also spoke out against the actions.
Antony has responded to the criticism and explained that he was defending the club after Coventry striker Wright cupped his ears to the United fans after his penalty.
Whilst Ten Hag agreed that his player had been provoked, he ultimately disagreed that it was the right move from Antony.
“He [Antony] was provoked, that’s why this was a reaction of that, you haven’t seen the provocation, only the reaction. But he should not do it.”
The Dutchman instead chose to concentrate on the behaviour of the rest of the squad.
He added: “I have seen Harry Maguire straight after and others, we should acknowledge the performance of Coventry coming to that final and the comeback we are 70 minutes totally dominating the game by far and 3-0 must have been the game is closed but the return from their side was very good.”
