Erik ten Hag admits Manchester United’s deadline day is not over
Erik ten Hag has admitted that Manchester United’s deadline day could yet see incomings or outgoings as the clock ticks towards the end of the window.
Manchester United have made two signings so far this window, with Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst both joining the club on six-month loan deals.
While Butland is yet to feature for the club, Weghorst has started four matches in a row up front due to an Anthony Martial injury.
There is yet to be any significant departures from the club this window, however Erik ten Hag has admitted that one or two could still happen.
When questioned on if Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Elanga, or any other player potentially going out on loan, he answered that they “could be but it depends on certain circumstances.”
Pellistri and Elanga have both been subject to multiple loan offers, however the club have so far turned down every one due to it not being deemed the right fit to develop the players.
Manchester United recently announced that Christian Eriksen will be out of action for the club for around three months, after sustaining an ankle injury during their 3-1 victory over Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday.
With United already thin on options in the centre, Ten Hag was asked on if it’s possible that the club could bring in a replacement before the deadline shuts.
“As you said, something on deadline day is difficult, you can’t make policy on bad injuries,” he replied. “We have players in the midfield department, good players, players who can fill the gap.”
“Of course he’s disappointed about it, we are disappointed about it,” Ten Hag continued on Eriksen’s injury. “But it happens in top football. We sooner (wish) it (didn’t) happen but it did and you have to deal with it.
“I think you can never fill that gap because very player has his own characteristics, identity, another player will always fill in a different way, but it doesn’t mean you have to be less successful.
“It’s quite clear Christian Eriksen brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace, such as his impacts in the final third with his final ball.”
With fewer than 12 hours left on the clock, if Manchester United want to sign a midfielders to replace Eriksen on a temporary basis, it has to be today.
