Emi Martínez is showing himself to be the type of player that Rúben Amorim is asking for with his recent Manchester United transfer decision.
Manchester United may be in line to sign a new goalkeeper this summer as Rúben Amorim looks to reshape the spine of his squad at Old Trafford completely.
Having already signed Matheus Cunha, and with a growing confidence at the club that they will secure Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim is also looking to secure a new striker and midfielder.
However, after André Onana’s two seasons at United so far, he has failed to live up to expectations, and there have been growing rumours that United may look to sign a new goalkeeper should the Cameroon international move on in the coming months.
Although Onana has been fantastic during short periods at Old Trafford, he has been criticised for going through too many poor patches of form, which have left United’s back line lacking trust in the 29-year-old.
Amorim made a significant transfer demand earlier this season
United do not have Champions League football next season after they fell to a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. This has already begun to impact the club’s capabilities in the transfer market.
Despite being able to secure Cunha and Mbeumo, having given his preference to United, they failed to land first-choice striker option Liam Delap and are having issues signing Viktor Gyökeres due to their lack of Champions League football next season.
However, even before losing the Europa League final in Bilbao, Amorim was firm in his demands regarding who the club want to sign, with the United head coach stating that he does not want to sign any player whose decision hinges on Champions League football.
“If a player only wants to come to Manchester United to play Champions League, then he won’t come,” the 40-year-old said in April. “We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”
Martínez is giving Amorim what he demanded
With Onana’s future in doubt, United have been keeping an eye on potential replacements for the player, and have been heavily linked with Aston Villa shotstopper Emi Martínez.
Amid Amorim’s want for players who will be investing in his project at Old Trafford regardless of Champions League football, Bolavip have reported that this is not an issue for Martínez.
Bolavip report that Aston Villa need to balance their books, which could open the door for Emiliano Martínez to leave. Manchester United are his preferred destination, but they’re holding off until André Onana is sold.
Galatasaray have taken advantage of the delay by opening talks to make Martínez their No.1, offering him Champions League football.
However, the Argentine isn’t keen on the move, as he wants to stay at the highest level to prepare for the 2026 World Cup. He’s still waiting for United, despite their lack of European football, due to the lure of the Premier League.
