Manchester United may be boosted by the return of one key player as Erik ten Hag prepares to face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United have suffered an intense injury crisis so far this season, with it being well documented that 16 players have been unavailable to Erik ten Hag at some point in the campaign thus far.

However, with the Newcastle United fixture on the horizon, United may be boosted by the return of Casemiro to the field, after a period out of the squad due to injury.

Kobbie Mainoo was included in the matchday squad for the first time this season during the 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon but remained on the bench for the duration of the fixture despite Ten Hag declaring that he was match-fit.

This clash was highlighted as a potential return to the lineup for the youngster, however, he played 90 minutes on Tuesday evening for the Under-21s against Salford City in the EFL Trophy.

He would go and make two assists in a disappointing 4-3 loss for Travis Binnion’s side, and played a 90-minute game, which makes it unlikely he starts on Wednesday.

Although, the teenager could still be included in the squad for the encounter. It does seem unlikely though after completing his first full game since his injury.

This Newcastle game does pose a good chance for Casemiro to return to the side though.

Amad Diallo is also now training on grass once again, but the game will likely come too soon for the player to make his return to the Old Trafford turf.

Meanwhile, Raphaël Varane, Sergio Reguilón, and Mason Mount are all available for selection after the trio have had mixed injury troubles, with the former on the bench against City while the latter two came on as second-half substitutes.

The club are positive that Aaron Wan-Bissaka can return to the side before the next international break, while Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martínez, and Luke Shaw all remain unavailable.

For Newcastle, big-money signing Sandro Tonali has recently received a 10-month ban due to gambling charges and is one of six players unavailable for selection by Eddie Howe.

Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy will both miss the tie, while Sven Botman and Harvey Barnes continue to see long spells on the sidelines. Young winger Elliot Anderson will also be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his lower back.
