Donny van de Beek may be offered a way out of Manchester United next summer after he was axed from Erik ten Hag’s Champions League squad.

Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax for a fee of £35 million during the summer of 2020, with many hoping he would become a mainstay in the squad.

After scoring on his debut as a substitute against Crystal Palace, the Dutchman never really had a good run of games under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Erik ten Hag is happy to offload him from the squad this summer.

Ten Hag’s final decision on Van de Beek was that he would play no part in Manchester United’s European campaign this season, and he was not selected as part of the squad that will play in the Champions League group stages.

Spanish publication Fichajes has now reported that, although Van de Beek did not get his move in the summer, La Liga side Villarreal have rekindled their interest in the midfielder ahead of next summer.

Van de Beek was available for transfer last window but ultimately no move came to fruition, and all signs point towards him being for sale once again in January, and if not, the summer of 2024.

Although the report states that there is no guarantee that Villarreal will act on their interest, it is stated that the club are refusing to rule out the possibility of signing Van de Beek from United next summer.

The Dutchman was included in United’s Premier League squad list for the 2023/24 season, but he has not played a single minute so far this campaign.
