“Spoke a lot…” Donny van de Beek reveals ex-Manchester United star helped seal his transfer
Donny van de Beek has revealed the former Manchester United player who helped him decide to leave Old Trafford for La Liga’s Girona.
Donny van de Beek, 27, recently secured a move to Spanish club Girona after a challenging four-year tenure at Manchester United, where his promising career stagnated.
Once ranked 28th in the 2019 Ballon d’Or, the young Ajax midfielder seemed poised for greatness and made a highly anticipated move to United in the summer of 2020.
His Old Trafford arrival thrilled many fans, but doubts lingered about how he would fit into a team centred around Bruno Fernandes.
Unfortunately, Van de Beek never found his footing at Old Trafford, and subsequent loan spells at Everton and Eintracht Frankfurt provided little improvement. As he approaches the prime years of his career, a fresh start at Girona could be just what he needs.
Speaking to Girona’s official YouTube channel during his official unveiling as a new player, Van de Beek explained that former United defender Daley Blind played a big part in his decision to leave United for the La Liga outfit.
“It will be difficult, but I will try to learn to speak Catalan,” Van de Beek said. “It is important to communicate with colleagues and workers.
“Blind told me about the club. Last season, I watched the team’s matches, and I liked the style of play. Beyond playing in the Champions League, coming to Girona is a step forward in my career. The Champions League is not my main reason for coming here. I would have come anyway.
“I spoke a lot with Daley Blind. He spoke very well to me about the club, the city and the football idea.”
While the Dutch player’s career at United did not work out, we wish him all the best at Girona and hope he thrives.
