Roy Keane slammed one Manchester United player for a poor moment against Newcastle which may cost him his place in the team to face Lyon.
Manchester United suffered yet another frustrating setback on Sunday afternoon, slumping to a 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle.
All four of Newcastle’s goals arguably stemmed from United’s own defensive errors.
Despite falling behind early, Ruben Amorim’s side showed some resilience, pulling level before halftime with a well-taken goal from Alejandro Garnacho.
But the second half was a different story entirely—United’s performance was woeful, and they conceded three more goals, allowing Newcastle to cruise to a comfortable victory.
The Reds must now regroup quickly and turn their attention to what is arguably their most crucial match of the season: a Europa League clash against Lyon on Thursday evening.
Bayindir display cost his chance at Lyon clash
There were several players starting on Sunday afternoon who could have made a claim to start against Lyon with a strong performance and none more-so than Altay Bayindir.
The Turkish international came in to make his Premier League debut after Andre Onana was left at home following his poor performance in the first-leg against the French side.
Onana was likely going to be recalled for the return leg at Old Trafford unless Bayindir forced Amorim to keep him between the sticks with a strong performance.
Yet, the 26-year-old did the complete opposite and his shaky display was defined by a mistake for Newcastle’s fourth goal, where his attempted clipped pass to Christian Eriksen was immediately intercepted and punished.
Keane says Bayindir didn’t do his homework
Speaking on the mistake which has almost certainly cost Bayindir his position in the team, Roy Keane slammed the goalkeeper for not “doing his homework” on the opposition.
Newcastle are well-known to be one of the best pressing sides in the Premier League and Keane believes Bayindir had to adjust his ball-playing.
“Again, I go back to the decision making. I’m not even sure what is the big benefit of [trying to play out there]. It’s too risky. It’s absolutely too risky. There’s players around you,” Keane told Sky Sports.
“We go back to the highest level, the real top players. It’s about your decision making. I’m quick to defend goalkeepers when they first come into the team because I think it does take 5, 6, 7 games to get up to speed with the shots.
“That basic mistake there is just… Honestly, I can’t understand it because… This is the top level. This is big boy stuff. You’re up at Newcastle. Newcastle are flying. You do your own homework on who you’re playing against and when they’re pressing you.

“And If you’re going to go long or you’re going to chip it, make sure you go too far. So then at least it’s up the pitch. You can argue afterwards. But if you lose it there, you know what’s going to happen.”
That goal was not the only mistake Bayindir made in possession. He attempted 57 passes in the game but completed just 28 of them.
