“Do it on the pitch…” – Diogo Dalot sends stern message to Man United teammates after Liverpool defeat
Diogo Dalot has sent a stern message to his Manchester United teammates after losing 3-0 against Liverpool on Sunday.
Manchester United fell to an embarrassing defeat against rivals Liverpool on the weekend in a poor showing from Erik ten Hag’s side.
The Reds had an early scare when Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check, but Liverpool soon took the lead.
Casemiro’s loss of possession led to a goal by Luis Diaz, and a similar error resulted in Liverpool’s second goal just before halftime.
Even after Casemiro was substituted at the break, Ten Hag’s tactics remained under scrutiny. Kobbie Mainoo was dispossessed in a similar fashion to the Brazilian, which led to the third and final goal.
Surprisingly, on the day there were still several United players who could hold their head high with their own personal performances.
Matthijs de Ligt had an outstanding first half despite falling off slightly in the second period, while Diogo Dalot was the standout for the home side.
Speaking to club media after the game, Dalot explained the importance of United players having the right attitude.
But he stressed that it is not enough for them to be talking about having the correct attitude, as many have over the years, but to show it on the pitch when it matters.
“I’m disappointed. We wanted to win this game for us, for the fans,” he said. “It’s a special game to play but we lost control.
“When you don’t win the small margins in a game like this, you get punished.
“Attitude is the first standard for you to play at this club and for you to succeed at this club.
“You need to play well and win games. But I think the first thing that needs to come is the attitude, and not just talk about it, actually do it on the pitch.”
The Portuguese right-back’s attitude and quality in the game on Sunday could not be questioned, but there would have been some major question marks over some of his teammates.
Ultimately, however, the focus is on Erik ten Hag, with the team still showing similar weaknesses that they displayed last season.
