David Raya unlikely to stay at Brentford as Thomas Frank sets price tag for Man United target
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has set a £40 million price tag for goalkeeper David Raya, with Manchester United amongst the clubs monitoring the Spaniard.
Raya, 27, has rejected two contract extensions after recently detailing his ambitions to win silverware. He’s been one of the most impressive keepers in the Premier League since coming up from the Championship two years ago.
United are one of several clubs looking at Raya as they look to provide David de Gea with a serious challenge between the sticks.
After his most recent appearance against Real Betis, De Gea was criticised for his ball-playing ability, although Erik ten Hag defended his no.1 afterwards, saying he is ‘improving’ in that department.
However, reports do suggest that the United boss believes that his team would benefit from having a goalkeeper who is more comfortable with the ball at their feet.
Frank has admitted that it will be difficult for Brentford to convince their shot-stopper to remain at the club. The Danish manager believes The Bees would have to finish in the top four in order for Raya to sign an extension.
“I think we need to get into the Champions League and then he will reconsider (re-signing),” Frank said.
“I love David as a keeper I think he is fantastic. But of course, I am biased as I work with him every single day. I really believe he is one of the best in the Premier League.
“Right now he is a Brentford player and been a big part of our success, so let’s see what happens in the summer.”
The statistics show that Raya is one of the most well-rounded goalkeepers in the league. Per 90, he collects 9.4% of crosses – registering himself in the top six per cent of keepers in Europe’s top five leagues – and completes 9.38 launched passes – the top two per cent of keepers in the top five leagues.
However, he won’t be particularly cheap, with Frank detailing the price tag that could pry him away from the Gtech Community Stadium.
“If someone wants to come in and buy him then he will be very expensive. For me, it would have to be £40m-plus,” added The Bees boss.
