David Ornstein reveals what Manchester United “don’t want to do” this summer, it rules out signing £100m duo

Transfer expert David Ornstein has revealed one move Manchester United do not want to make this summer, which rules out signing either of a £100m duo at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are set for a major summer overhaul as they look to back Rúben Amorim by reshaping the squad and raising funds through player sales. The focus will be on moving on individuals who no longer align with the club’s evolving direction under the new manager.

Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen are both expected to leave at the end of the season when their contracts expire. United are not planning to offer extensions, allowing both players to depart as free agents.

The club are also looking to sell players currently out on loan, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia all likely to be made available. Amorim is not expected to include any of the trio in his future plans.

Casemiro is another player possibly heading for the exit, as the club shifts towards a younger, more dynamic profile better suited to Amorim’s tactical approach, while his current wage is a significant drain on the club’s resources.

United don’t want to sell Onana

Amid the exodus that is bound to take place, United fans are hoping that many of the incoming players that result from the summer window will see the club improve in most areas of the pitch.

This could either be upgrading the quality of those starting each fixture by bringing in names like Matheus Cunha, or improving the depth of the squad in positions such as midfield and centre-back.

However, transfer expert David Ornstein has explained that, if they can help it, United do not want to have to sign a replacement for André Onana this summer despite a series of error-stricken displays in goal across the first few months of 2025.

“One thing they don’t want to have to do is replace André Onana if he can prove himself, because a new goalkeeper was not on the agenda, certainly not a [new] No. 1,” Ornstein revealed on NBC Sports.

“So let’s see if he can turn his form around, stay at Old Trafford, and try and provide a bit of stability between the sticks.”

£100m double transfer ruled out

With United looking to retain Onana this summer, this would save the club as much as £100 million in funding, considering the prices of some of the best goalkeepers in the world available this summer.

With United potentially letting go of second-choice shot-stopper Altay Bayındır this summer, United’s transfer policy has mainly been to sign young players who can grow into becoming stars at Old Trafford.

Reports from earlier in April stated that United had made contact with Brighton to sign 22-year-old goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. However, the Premier League side stated any transfer would cost in the region of £60 million.

With this in mind and the possibility of United having to sign two goalkeepers this summer, they have also reportedly revived their interest in 22-year-old Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who they initially wanted over Bayındır in 2023.

However, with Suzuki now performing well with Parma, the Serie A outfit have stated that a fee of £40 million would be the price they are willing to accept.

However, with United now looking to keep Onana if they can and those such as Elyh Harrison waiting in the wings for a chance with the first-team, United may save themselves from splashing out as much as £100 million in the summer on new goalkeepers.
