David de Gea makes next career decision after sharing stance on Man United exit
David de Gea has made his next career decision after sharing his stance on his Manchester United exit in the summer of 2023.
De Gea, 33, is set to make his comeback this season after a hiatus from football following his departure from United last year.
The Spaniard, replaced by André Onana, became a free agent following 12 years at Old Trafford but chose to stay out of the game despite various offers.
Now, it appears De Gea will return to the pitch this summer. He hinted at an imminent decision by posting an hourglass emoji on his X account last weekend.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the veteran goalkeeper has “given his opening” to the project at Serie A club Genoa.
It was added that the Italian side will now discuss internally whether to take the former United shot-stopper or look for another profile elsewhere.
The Athletic explained that De Gea had an offer from the Premier League on the table this summer but does not want to return to the country after spending over a decade with United.
The outlet added that De Gea considered retirement in the months following his Old Trafford departure and was upset with the way his exit materialised.
In particular, the 33-year-old held former football director John Murtough and manager Erik ten Hag responsible for his departure.
The report interestingly added that the goalkeeper had told his inner circle that he would be happy to return to United if those two figures were no longer there.
Murtough departed the club as part of the INEOS shakeup, with Dan Ashworth taking up the position of sporting director. However, the new ownership have stuck by Ten Hag and agreed extended terms on his contract at the club.
De Gea holds the clean sheet record for United and made 545 appearances during his 12-year stint at the club.
