Manchester United football director John Murtough was appointed to the role in 2021 and has played a key role throughout Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Murtough originally joined the Old Trafford club in January 2014 after being hand-picked by then-manager David Moyes.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe coming into United, there are expected to be changes within the footballing department. However, reports have suggested that Murtough could remain in some capacity.

A detailed report on the club under the leadership of Murtough from The Athletic has revealed several interesting aspects of what kind of structure Ineos are taking over.

There have been many criticisms of the way Murtough and his team have dealt with transfer windows since Ten Hag took charge, with signings such as Antony, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund being questioned for the price and negotiation strategy involved.

Whilst the team have struggled on the pitch this season, players are appreciative that problems spread wider than the Dutch manager.

According to The Athletic, one senior player is said to be disappointed at United’s summer recruitment after being promised major signings to get the club competing for the biggest honours when he spoke with Murtough before joining.

It was added that Harry Kane, who instead moved to Bayern Munich last summer, would have come into this bracket.

United’s summer involved signing Hojlund, Mount and Andre Onana; as well as Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon on loan deals. All five of those players have had major difficulties so far this term.

The Reds gave up on their pursuit of Kane after it was made clear negotiations would be extremely difficult with Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.
