Confirmed Match Officials: Manchester United vs Chelsea (Premier League)
The penultimate Premier League home game for Manchester United this campaign will take place against Chelsea on Thursday at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils only need one point to guarantee themselves a spot in the Champions League for the 2023/24 season.
The mid-table Blues lost 1-0 to the newly crowned champions Manchester City, while the Red Devils are close to finishing in the top four thanks to their 1-0 triumph against Bournemouth the preceding weekend.
At Bournemouth, Casemiro’s splendid goal ended an otherwise lacklustre game with a 1-0 win for United. Meanwhile, David de Gea won the Golden Glove after recording his 17th league clean sheet despite having endured criticism this season.
Erik ten Hag is close to achieving his overall objective in his first season at Old Trafford. If United manage to avoid a loss on Thursday, the fourth-placed Red Devils, who have one game left and are three points ahead of Liverpool, will secure their place in the Champions League for the upcoming season. However, if they lose, they will have another chance against Fulham on Sunday.
Match Referee
Stuart Atwell will be the main man in charge of the match on Thursday. He has previously refereed five Manchester United fixtures in the Premier League this season – most recently United’s 0-2 loss against Newcastle in April.
He was, in fact, in charge of refereeing the reverse fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in October which ended in a 1-1 draw.
He has issued 77 yellow cards and no red cards across 23 Premier League fixtures this season but has awarded four penalties.
Assistant Referees
Ian Hussin and Richard West will be the assistant referees for the match.
Fourth Official
Anthony Taylor will be on the sidelines between Erik ten Hag and Frank Lampard on Thursday.
Video Assistant Referee
Michael Salisbury will take charge of VAR for the game, with Steve Meredith his assistant.
