Cerro Porteño’s club president has sent Manchester United an exciting message, with Diego Leon’s transfer set to be complete ‘very soon’.

Paraguayan prospect Diego Leon has been under close observation by Manchester United in recent months, earmarked as a future talent for Old Trafford.

The Reds have now finalised a deal to acquire the 17-year-old next summer, once he turns 18, for an initial fee of £3.1 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The highly-rated teenage left-back, currently impressing at Cerro Porteño, is seen as a potential long-term contender for the left wing-back position in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

Leon had also garnered attention from several elite European clubs, including Premier League rivals Arsenal, before opting to join United.

This signing reflects United’s evolving strategy under INEOS ownership, emphasising the recruitment of affordable young talents with high potential.

Chido Obi-Martin and Sekou Kone, who were signed earlier in the summer, are similarly viewed as promising prospects for future roles in the first team at Old Trafford.

After reports of a deal being completed, Cerro Porteño’s president Juan José Zapag addressed the 17-year-old’s situation.

He claimed that Leon is a ‘left-back like no other’ in high praise before admitting that the interest in him from United will be ‘defined’ in the coming days.

“Diego León, a left-back like no other in the world, is kind of scarce. The interest in him is official and surely in the next few days it will be defined,” he said, as per Sport Witness.

“He is in sight, very soon and we believe he can be an important transfer alternative, but we have him assured in the semester.”

Leon’s move to Old Trafford will occur in the summer of 2025 after he turns 18 and he is set to sign a five-year deal.
