Manchester United are likely to sign at least one goalkeeper for Ruben Amorim in the upcoming summer transfer window.
There continue to be doubts at Manchester United over the abilities of Andre Onana as the first-choice goalkeeper for the club.
Even if the Cameroon goalkeeper is given the chance to stay next season, Ruben Amorim will likely need a replacement for Altay Bayindir, who is expected to depart this summer.
Tom Heaton is in talks to extend his contract, which would mean that a third-choice ‘keeper won’t be a concern in the transfer market, although United will want a number two who can challenge Onana.
Various goalkeepers have already been linked with a move to the club and a club president has came out and addressed the transfer speculation surrounding his shot-stopper.
Club president provides latest on Milinković-Savić
According to reports from the Italian media, United are exploring a potential move for Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić, who previously spent time in the club’s Academy back in 2015.
The 28-year-old Serbian is currently valued at approximately £17 million, with both Manchester City and Napoli also monitoring his situation ahead of the summer transfer window.
Savić joined United’s academy in 2014 but the club would go onto release him for free on 1 January 2016 when he joined Lechia Gdansk.
Now at Torino, the goalkeeper is excelling and attracting transfer interest although the club’s president, Urbano Cairo, has revealed that no offers have come in for the player yet.
“He had a great championship and it is normal that he receives a lot of attention,” Cairo said, as per Sport Witness. “But no offer has arrived yet.”
Why United signing a backup goalkeeper could be very beneficial
It seems like the idea is for Onana to remain at United next season but a stronger backup would be beneficial for Amorim.
Bayindir never seemed like he would take the position away from Onana even during his worst moments and that is because the Turkish goalkeeper has not blown people away when he has managed to get minutes on the pitch.
United fans consistently speak about Sergio Romero as one of the best backup goalkeepers the club have had and it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that David de Gea’s best years came with the Argentine pushing him.
There are plenty of more important transfers for United this summer but a strong backup ‘keeper could be more beneficial than many would expect.
