A club director is in talks with Manchester United over a £25 million deal but Chelsea are the ones who hold the key to a potential transfer.

Corriere dello Sport have reported that Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna is set to hold talks with United over the potential transfer of Scott McTominay.

It was reported that the Italian club had a loan offer rejected by the Reds, who are looking for at least £25 million for the Scottish international.

McTominay has made 253 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit, scoring 29 goals and assisting nine times.

The academy graduate has been available for transfer this summer, but clubs have so far been unwilling to meet their price tag for the player.

Fulham made a £20 million bid for the 27-year-old but have not since returned with an improved offer.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, both Erik ten Hag and McTominay have shown a ‘willingness to start negotiations’ with the Serie A outfit.

However, the Naples club are waiting to receive a big cash amount from Victor Osimhen’s sale this summer. The striker has been heavily linked to Chelsea.

The report explained that Napoli can only meet United’s demands for McTominay if they sell the Nigerian centre-forward.

This suggests that the key for the potential transfer lies in Chelsea’s hands, who have signed countless players already this summer but still need a top-class striker in their ranks.

Contrasting reports from Gianluca Di Marzio have stated that Napoli could spend the cash without selling Osimhen if manager Antonio Conte considers McTominay as a priority target.

Alfredo Pedullà added that the United man is, in fact, the ‘priority’ target for Conte and that Napoli will have a ‘new meeting in the next few hours’ with McTominay’s agent.

Should a deal be completed, it would allow United space in the budget to sign number one midfield target Manuel Ugarte, who is currently valued at £51 million by Paris Saint-Germain.
