One club’s director has confirmed that they had an interest in a Manchester United star who admitted he was “unhappy” at Old Trafford last season.

The Reds sold many players in the summer transfer window, with the likes of Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Mason Greenwood departing.

It was one of the club’s most successful transfer windows in terms of sales, but there were still various players who could not be moved on.

Casemiro, the 32-year-old Brazilian, was one of them, while his 2022/23 midfield partner Christian Eriksen was another.

It was revealed by Fabrizio Romano that La Liga club Real Betis made a deadline day approach for the Danish international but an agreement could not be reached.

There were also rumours linking Eriksen back to his former club, Ajax, throughout the summer.

Ajax sporting director Alex Kroes has now confirmed that Eriksen was, in fact, on the Eredivisie club’s list this summer but a deal could not materialise due to “various circumstances”.

“He was definitely on the list, on the long list,” he admitted, speaking to AjaxTV, as quoted by ESPN NL

“A boy from the club, experience, routine and a good footballer. Ultimately, we were unable to create space for this due to various circumstances.”

Eriksen started just 14 games for United in all competitions last season and is likely to have a similar role this term after the signing of Manuel Ugarte.

Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet last term, Eriksen admitted that he had been “unhappy” with his playing time at Old Trafford.

“I’ve said in the past that I’m not happy with not playing,” he explained. “But it’s not something I lose sleep over. The team performs, and then I have to respect the role you have on the side.

“For me, it’s been working hard and focusing on being fresh for every game, and I am. It’s easier now to accept my role than it was before.”

The 32-year-old Dane has played just four minutes in the opening three games of the new Premier League season.
