Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has made a controversial Premier League prediction for Manchester United and Ruben Amorim this season.

Ruben Amorim began his tenure at Manchester United last week and has since commenced on-field training with his new squad.

The head coach is now evaluating the players to identify those who align with the new system he plans to implement. He has already started work with the 3-4-3 shape in training.

He will be well aware of the extremely busy period he is about to encounter, with the Reds having at least 23 games before the next international break in March.

The first opponent will be newly promoted Ipswich Town on the weekend and Amorim will have full focus on that game.

But he will also recognise how important the next few months are for his United team, especially in the Premier League.

Currently, the Reds sit 13th in the table but are just four points away from the top four. The standings are extremely congested which means United still have a chance of pushing for those Champions League spots.

However, despite there being just a matter of points between United and those above them, Chris Sutton does not believe that this United squad has what it makes to finish in the top four.

Instead, the former Premier League striker suggests that Amorim should be judged on how the team are playing and whether they adapt the identity which the new head coach spoke about in his first interview.

“I still think there needs to be massive patience for Amorim. I think he needs a lot of time,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“And I think in terms of expectation this season, I don’t think that there are team capable of finishing in a Champions League spot.

“You know, I don’t, I think [the expectation] it’s just to see signs of progress this season and maybe that might not be enough for some.

“But just to see… as Amorim said, a team with an identity, moving in the right direction.

“It will be interested to see what happens in the January window, and it will interesting to see what happens in the summer in terms of bringing players in.”
