Chelsea stance on sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United revealed after David Ornstein confirmation
Chelsea’s stance on whether they want to send Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United this summer has been revealed following confirmation about his contract from David Ornstein.
In the final days of the 2024 summer transfer window, it was confirmed that Jadon Sancho had left Manchester United on loan to sign with Chelsea for the 2024/25 campaign.
It was later revealed that an agreement had been reached between the two clubs that saw Chelsea oblige to pay £25 million for the winger this coming summer.
Sancho had been exiled by Erik ten Hag the season prior and sent to Borussia Dortmund, and although he was welcomed back into the Old Trafford squad in July 2024, there was little future for him at the club.
Since the move, Sancho has played 27 times for the London side, scoring twice and providing six assists in that period
Ornstein confirms bizarre Sancho report
Earlier this week, reports broke that there was a chance Sancho may still return to United this summer as Sancho’s representatives and Chelsea had not already negotiated a contract for once his deal turned permanent.
Later, reliable journalist David Ornstein confirmed to The Athletic that although the condition to buy Sancho this summer is an obligation, Chelsea could avoid signing the 24-year-old if they paid a penalty fee that voided the clause.
“It was a conditional obligation to buy, so firstly those conditions must be met and then – as has been reported elsewhere – Chelsea can decide against going through with the obligation by paying a fee,” Ornstein confirmed.
“So, technically, he could return to Manchester United, but that was not the aim of any party when they embarked upon this deal. Let’s see if that remains the case or changes, which would obviously be a big story.”
What Chelsea think about keeping Sancho
Despite the news that, in theory, Sancho could depart Stamford Bridge and return to Old Trafford under Rúben Amorim, this seems unlikely to happen.
According to GiveMeSport, Sancho is still expected to sign for Chelsea this summer once his loan contract comes to an end, with United receiving their £25 million and the player’s wages off their books.
The report states that, despite criticism, Chelsea are happy with Sancho’s current form, and that if they chose to pay the penalty, it would come as a surprise to all involved.
It is revealed that the penalty Chelsea would have to pay United all their part of Sancho’s salary that they have been contributing to this season, and a little extra cash on top.
