Chelsea slash Christopher Nkunku price-tag as Manchester United consider transfer move

Chelsea have reportedly slashed the price tag for Manchester United target Christopher Nkunku this summer as the Reds consider a move.

Manchester United made an impressive start to the summer transfer window, securing Matheus Cunha early and actively pursuing a move for Bryan Mbeumo.

While both additions would bolster United’s attacking midfield and No.10 roles, the squad still lacks a proven centre-forward — a pressing issue that remains unresolved.

Rasmus Højlund showed flashes of promise last season but struggled with consistency. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee, though a talented forward, is more comfortable operating in the no.10 role rather than as the main striker.

With several striker targets now appearing unlikely, United have reportedly revived their interest in Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku.

Although not a traditional No.9, Nkunku was outstanding during his time in Germany. His last standout season came in 2022/23 with RB Leipzig, where he primarily thrived as a shadow striker.

Chelsea slash Nkunku price-tag

While Nkunku is not one of United’s main targets, he is someone they are considering and they might be convinced of a move after Chelsea slashed his price tag.

The Frenchman was signed by the Stamford Bridge outfit for £52 million but the Blues are prepared to slash his price tag after a difficult time at the club.

According to The Mirror, Chelsea have quoted £35 million to United as the price to sign Nkunku this summer, which is cheaper than most of the alternatives.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will pursue a deal for the 27-year-old, although the chances feel more likely considering that price tag.

Nkunku deal more attractive due to valuation

Nkunku is certainly not the best option for United but he is not as poor as his Chelsea stint has suggested either.

Of course, a more natural goalscorer would be preferred at Old Trafford but there are not an unlimited amount of top no.9s on the market.

The fact that United also need to sell to buy puts these kind of £60 million deals into question, which makes Nkunku’s £35m valuation more attractive.

Don’t expect United to complete this deal soon, but it could be something which occurs later in the window if other options do not materialise.
