Chelsea have poached Dan Ashworth’s No. 1 Manchester United target following problems in negotiations with Newcastle United.

INEOS is eager to secure the appointment of Dan Ashworth as the new sporting director for Manchester United from Newcastle as part of their rebuilding of the Old Trafford club.

However, negotiations have become challenging as Newcastle insists on a hefty £20 million fee for the Englishman and has also imposed a two-year gardening leave clause.

This has scuppered Manchester United’s plans for the summer window, and according to The Athletic, Chelsea have now swooped in to secure a high-profile target of Ashworth’s.

Ashworth was said to be a big fan of Brighton’s head of recruitment Sam Jewell, and the club were looking to bring him in for a role at the new-look United, but this will no longer happen.

The report states that Jewell has accepted an offer from Chelsea for a senior position, where he will play “a global role across Chelsea’s owners’ multi-club model”.

With United having issues actually bringing Ashworth to Old Trafford, they will now have to discuss where else they can bring in high-quality people as part of the new regime at United.

It is expected that the club will continue to engage in formal discussions with Newcastle surrounding a compensation fee for Ashworth lower than the reported £20 million.
