Championship boss confirms interest in Manchester United star, “We have an option to bring…”

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirović has confirmed that his side are interested in signing Toby Collyer on loan from Manchester United this month.

After making his senior debut in last season’s Community Shield against Manchester City, Toby Collyer finished the campaign on the fringes of the first team following years of working towards his opportunity.

Rúben Amorim quickly developed a fondness for the midfielder, handing him regular minutes in both the Premier League and Europa League after the turn of 2025, before a leg injury curtailed his involvement towards the end of the season.

In an effort to secure more game time, Collyer was sent on loan to Championship side West Brom this season. The move was disrupted by injury setbacks, although he showed promise whenever he was available.

He was later recalled to Manchester United to continue his rehabilitation at Carrington and now appears set for another spell in the Championship.

Jakirović confirms interest in Collyer

When Collyer chose to sign for West Brom, it came at the rejection of Hull City, who were at the time quitely confident they would secure the former Brighton talent. But, following his return to United, Hull boss Sergej Jakirović has now confirmed their Janaury interest.

“We have an option to bring Collyer from Man United, so we will see,” Jakirovic told the press reporters last week.

“We spoke already this summer. It was a very nice conversation together with Jonny Evans at that time, who was the loan manager [at United], but at that time, he chose West Brom, which is OK I respect that.

“Maybe he didn’t believe that we would have a good season, and have a good team. It was tricky back then, when you have an embargo, you cannot bring the players. Also, you must look after yourself because you need the minutes, and maybe in our team it’s easier to get the minutes.”

Hull need to keep him injury-free

The main issue for Collyer since his senior football debut has been fitness. Despite playing well at times and earning the trust of multiple managers, the English talent has failed to remain consistently fit, which has significantly hindered his development.

When quizzed on Collyer’s injury issues, Jakirović added: “He’s fine now. He had a calf injury as well. He’s a young player, and he’s capable of playing in the six or eight position. He can run 12K every game, so I think that he can help us, we can help him, and I think he will fit in the team good.”

A key point United will make to Hull is to ensure his loads are managed effectively and that he is not put at risk of further injury.

His stay at Hull will last only a few more months, but it will be key to see Collyer given consistent but controlled minutes ahead of the summer, when he will likely either be integrated into the first team at Old Trafford or sold.
