Rumours surrounding a £90 million exit of one Manchester United star this summer has been rubbished, with Rúben Amorim unlikely to sanction the deal.
As Manchester United prepare for the summer transfer window, Rúben Amorim faces the task of filling several important gaps in his squad.
Reports suggest that up to 10 senior players, including Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Casemiro, could be leaving Old Trafford to help raise funds for new acquisitions.
With this money, the club is reportedly looking to sign a new striker, a deep-lying midfielder, an attacking midfielder, a left wing-back, and a goalkeeper, with a centre-back also on the list of priorities.
However, due to financial challenges, it’s expected that Manchester United will prioritize cost-effective signings rather than pursuing high-profile players with large price tags.
Fernandes’ £90m summer transfer rubbished
Amid United’s need for funds, English reports emerged last week that Real Madrid were plotting a £90 million bid for the club’s captain, Bruno Fernandes.
However, Spanish journalist Paco González has scuppered these reports, claiming that although Fernandes is a “very good” player, it has been more likely fueled by a simple request from Madrid to watch a game, and that the 30-year-old does not fit into Madrid president Florentino Pérez’s plans.
“Today they published in England that Real Madrid wants Bruno Fernandes and has made an offer of £90m. He’s 30 years old, he’s very good,” González told Cope.
“Maybe many teams ask for a pass to watch a game, but maybe it’s a scout that Real Madrid has for England or a man going to see someone else.”
Continuing, González said: “But for a 30-year-old guy, Madrid paying 90 million, knowing the calculations Florentino Pérez has in his head, that signings have to be paid off and they have to be young, seems impossible to me. If they’re free, I mean, if they arrive for free, yes. If not, well, no way.
The journalist then said “I don’t believe it at all” when asked for his view on the legitimacy of the claims from England.
Amorim would never let it happen
Aside from the initial claims being somewhat proven false, it is also a transfer that Amorim would never let happen, especially not this coming summer window.
Fernandes is critical to United both now and in the future. The club captain recently penned a new contract until 2027, with the club retaining the option to extend this until 2028 if they choose to do so.
Speaking earlier this month, Amorim explained how he wants more players like Fernandes in his team, so the idea that the head coach would get rid of him is null and void.
“We need more Brunos, that is clear,” the head coach said following a 1-1 draw with Arsenal a few weeks ago.
“It’s not just the quality and the character. He makes some mistakes but he is so decisive with and without the ball. He steps up all the time. He can show some frustration in some moments that can hurt him more than everyone. I understand that. He wants to win.
“But he is always available, can play in different positions and when we need a goal and an assist he is always there.”
