Bruno Fernandes has sent Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola a stern warning as Manchester United prepare for the Manchester derby on Sunday afternoon.

Rúben Amorim is gearing his squad up to face Manchester City in the Premier League in yet another big test for the club’s new head coach.

Following a 2-1 comeback victory over FC Viktoria Plzeň in the Europa League on Thursday evening, thanks to a brace from substitute Rasmus Højlund, attention returns to domestic festive action.

Manchester City themselves are in turmoil, having won just one of their last ten fixtures across all competitions, including Pep Guardiola suffering a 4-1 hammering at the hands Amorim at Sporting earlier this season.

With City seeing their hopes of a fifth consecutive Premier League title fading, United will look to impound further misery on them at their own ground while pulling themselves up from 13th in the league.

Fernandes’ warning to Guardiola

Speaking to MUTV following their win over Plzen, United club captain Bruno Fernandes sent a warning shot to Guardiola, explaining that his side will do everything in their power to defeat City.

“You know what it means to play a Manchester derby,” Fernandes explained. “You know how much it means for the city, for our fans.

“So we have to do everything we can to win that game because, like I said in Europa League, it’s the same in the league, we’re not in the position we want to be, we need points, we need to win.

“And for us, obviously, it’s Manchester City, it’s a Manchester derby, but it’s just one more game that we want to, and we have to, win.”

Two ways United must improve

However, the 30-year-old also pointed out that he feels there are two areas in which he and his teammates can improve once they head to the Etihad Stadium.

“We should have done even a little bit better at the end,” Fernandes told the cameras.

“We had two or three transition moments where we could have killed the game. But also, when we don’t kill, we have to run back quick, and we did it a lot of times.”

United have not had a fantastic record against City at the Etihad of late, but with both sides’ forms taking bizarre turns, anything could happen on Sunday.
