Former Manchester United defender David May has heaped praise on Bruno Fernandes upon the latter’s return to the United squad.

Spending a couple of weeks on the injury list, Fernandes was forced to watch from the sidelines as his side lost without scoring in consecutive games against Crystal Palace and Arsenal.

On Wednesday night Fernandes would return to the team, putting up a game-changing performance against Newcastle. This is despite UtdDistrict understanding the creative midfielder was still carrying an injury going into the Newcastle game.

Speaking after what was arguably the best ninety minutes of football Erik ten Hag’s side have played in weeks, Fernandes confirmed that he will be staying at Manchester United, despite rumours of his impending departure.

Performing at his very best, Fernandes’ performance and statement earned the praise of both fans and ex-United defender May.

Discussing Fernandes’ performance against Newcastle on Wednesday night, May admitted that the United captain has been missed greatly.

Naming Fernandes his man of the match, the United-treble-winner praised the Portugal international for leading his team to victory.

“There was a few options [for man of the match]. I mean Bruno, the last two games Bruno has been a massive, massive miss, I thought he was exceptional tonight,” May told MUTV.

“He covered every blade of grass, was involved in Rasmus’ goal, and just an overall captain’s performance. He dragged the team forward.

“You can see how important Bruno is as well. When he plays, this team ticks. When he doesn’t play, they don’t tick. There’s a massive gap. He’s been brilliant.”

Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez, both of whom have been dealing with injuries for some time, also returned to the pitch against Newcastle.
