In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, the 29-year-old was praised for his dominant ‘captain’s performance’ which helped secure the three points.
Responding to the compliment, Fernandes, however, sent his teammates a message, saying that the captaincy shouldn’t raise his performance as all of the team should be performing to their maximum levels regardless.
“It doesn’t exist, a captain’s performance; it is a team performance,” he explained while standing on the Old Trafford turf.
“I am no different from anyone just because I have the armband. I always try my best, and we always do the best we can for the club – nobody hides that we play for a big club, and we have to lift our standards every game.”
In recent weeks, there has been speculation about the Portuguese midfielder’s future at Manchester United, with clubs such as Barcelona reportedly interested in securing his signature.
But, when asked about his future at the club, Fernandes made his desires clear.
He said: “I will be here till when the club wants me and the club wants me to be a part of the future. If, for some reason, they don’t want me, then I will go.”
