Bruno Fernandes has revealed the dressing room reaction to Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s first Premier League fixture as Manchester United‘s interim manager ended in a stalemate as the side drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Sunday evening.

The tie, which took place at Old Trafford, started with both sides staying reasonably conservative, although both teams hit the post during the first half.

The game opened up in the second half, and Bruno Fernandes struck first with a penalty kick after Rasmus Højlund was brought down in the area following a fantastic cross from Casemiro.

However, Moisés Caicedo quickly replied, striking brilliantly from the edge of the area to grab a goal back for Chelsea. Both sides then pushed for a winner but failed to convert, and the tie ended in a 1-1 draw.

Dressing room reaction

Following the draw, club captain and goalscorer Fernandes revealed the dressing room reaction, explaining that the United players feel they could have won the tie.

“It was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room. We could have won the game,” Fernandes told BBC Sport after the game.

“Not much has changed. In midweek the goals went in. I said to some friends everything will come to us and people will say we wanted the manager to be sacked. We get the point and we can be happy for that. We need to be disappointed because we’re far back in the league.”

A personal highlight

Fernandes’ penalty was the player’s first goal of the season in the competition, just a few days after he marked his first finish of the campaign against Leicester City in midweek.

Fernandes admitted that he knows he needed to score as he needs to help the team more and is happy to finally get off the mark.

“Everyone knows how much I wanted the goal to come,” he said. “I need to help the team with goals and assists.

“It’s been one of the most disappointing things this season – but I got some in the cup. Now scoring in the Premier League.”
