Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he expected Maxi Oyedele to come through into the Manchester United first-team before his summer transfer exit.

The Reds were particularly busy during the summer transfer window, with five first-team signings being made.

With more than £200 million being spent on the likes of Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, sales were also important for United.

Many players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Scott McTominay departed the club while several young talents also left Old Trafford.

One notable departure was that of promising midfielder Maxi Oyedele, who moved to Polish club Legia Warsaw before making his debut for United.

The deal included a sell-on clause, a buyback option, and matching rights, giving United the opportunity to re-sign the 19-year-old in the future.

However, the decision to let Oyedele go came as a surprise given his talent and impressive performances during pre-season.

It was also a move that club captain Bruno Fernandes seemed to question as he claims “everyone” at United expected him to come through into the first-team like Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

TVP SPORT spoke to the United captain ahead of Portugal’s clash against Poland, a game in which both Fernandes and Oyedele started.

The 30-year-old offered huge compliments to the teenager, but also suggested that the most important thing for him right now is consistent minutes on the pitch.

“Yeah, I think that Max was a really good player,” Fernandes said when asked whether he was surprised at Oyedele’s exit.

“I think he was always one of the players that everyone at the club thought he would be one of the ones coming from the Academy into the first-team.

“He has great qualities, he’s a great kid and really humble. He works a lot and really hard. Another one [who is] technically really, really good and I wish him all the best.

“He knows he has his qualities so he came to Poland, he’s enjoying his football and that is the most important thing for him; to play a lot of minutes.

“Now he’s in the national team and it’s a big thing for him.”
