“Didn’t need to do that…” – Bruno Fernandes’ incredible behind-the-scenes leadership revealed by free agent
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ incredible behind-the-scenes leadership has been detailed by a free agent.
Joe Lewis described his experience training with Manchester United’s first team last season as “unbelievable.”
The 36-year-old goalkeeper, who departed Aberdeen last year, was invited to maintain his fitness during a tough period for Old Trafford club.
This offered him a rare behind-the-scenes view at Carrington, something United fans are always eager to know more about.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Lewis revealed that club captain Bruno Fernandes would sit with him in the canteen and that the Portuguese midfielder is the ‘hardest worker’ he has ever seen.
He said: “He’d lead by example in training, and he’s just a really good guy. He’d spend time with me, someone he didn’t know, who was just a training goalkeeper, and we’d sit down at lunchtime.
“Bruno didn’t need to do that with me, but he’s a really good leader and an incredibly talented player. He has a wand of a right foot and has unbelievable technique.

“He’s the hardest worker I’ve ever seen, and there’s loads of hard workers at United. Every day, he works on shooting, his first touch, and he’s out there training longer than any player at the club.”
Fernandes recently signed a new deal at United, which will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027 and make him one of the top earners in Erik ten Hag’s squad.
“Everybody knows the passion I have for Manchester United,” the club captain said. “I understand the responsibility and significance of wearing this shirt and the levels of dedication and desire required to represent this incredible club.
“I have had so many special moments here already: hearing my name sung from the Stretford End, scoring a hat-trick against Leeds, leading the team out at Old Trafford on European nights and lifting trophies at Wembley.
“But I wouldn’t have signed this contract if I didn’t believe that my best moments in a United shirt are still to come.”
