Brentford’s ‘imaginary bid’ bluff sees them set new Bryan Mbeumo price tag in Man Utd transfer saga

With a third Manchester United bid pending, Brentford have seemingly set a new Bryan Mbeumo price tag amid an ‘imaginary bid’ bluff.

Manchester United’s summer activities got off to a flying start, securing the signing of their top target Matheus Cunha in only a matter of weeks for £62.5 million.

However, since then, transfers have dried up for Ruben Amorim’s side. Negotiations for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo have dragged on for over a month now, and the two clubs still are yet to agree on a fee.

The Red Devils have seen two bids rejected by the West London side so far, with the second bid matching Cunha’s fee of £62.5 million.

Brentford’s ‘imaginary bid’ reveals valuation

The Athletic have reported, via United In Focus, that Brentford have now placed a £70 million price tag on their prized asset, courtesy of an imaginary bid from Tottenham Hotspur for that amount.

Athletic correspondent Laurie Whitwell said, “Brentford were pitching for a higher fee than Cunha, given Mbeumo’s stats.

“There’s obviously this idea that Spurs had made a bid of £70 million and that’s being used by Brentford as a gauge, but Spurs are denying to me and other people that they’ve made a bid.”

With this bid being seemingly untrue, it reveals to United the type of fee that The Bees are holding out for, which could hopefully speed up proceedings in this never-ending saga.

Will United and Brentford find an agreement?

The issue for United in the past has been the ‘United tax’ that has often seen them pay over-the-top fees for players, due to clubs being aware of the club’s spending power.

Now that the Red Devils are trying to move away from this stigma, they need to hold firm with this Mbeumo saga and call Brentford’s bluff.

Having already seen the departures of Mark Flekken, Thomas Frank, and soon Christian Nørgaard, it is understandable that Brentford don’t want to part ways with their 25-year-old goalscorer without a fight.

Hopefully for Amorim’s side, this saga can soon come to a close, and United can get their man in time for what needs to be a progressive pre-season.
