Brentford have made it known that Manchester United may have a major transfer problem surrounding their pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo.
Manchester United are in ongoing discussions over what would be their third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, as they work to finalise a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.
Rúben Amorim is keen to further strengthen his attacking options, having already added Cunha to his forward line, though negotiations with Brentford have progressed slowly.
United saw an initial £55 million offer for the 25-year-old rejected in early June, and a second bid—matching that figure with an additional £7.5 million in add-ons—was also turned down.
Despite the resistance, reports suggest there is optimism that a deal will be struck. If Mbeumo makes the move to Old Trafford, United are expected to focus on player exits and continue their pursuit of a new striker and midfielder ahead of the Premier League’s return in mid-August.
United heading toward major Mbeumo issue
The proposed transfer has become a source of intense frustration for those loyal to United, as despite Mbeumo signalling his clear intention to join the Old Trafford club over a month ago, an agreement between the two clubs has still not been reached.
With the potential transfer continuing to drag onward, United have been dealt what could become a defining blow as Tottenham have registered interest in signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa this summer.
According to Sky Sports, Spurs have a genuine interest in the 29-year-old, and more crucially for United, Brentford has made it known that they do not want to lose both Wissa and Mbeumo in the same summer.
“Brentford would be unlikely to sell both Wissa and Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo,” Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas detailed.
“If Spurs, or any other club, did a deal for Wissa, that it would become increasingly difficult for United to sign Mbeumo.”
United still confident that they can secure Mbeumo before pre-season
While Tottenham’s interest in Wissa poses a significant threat to United’s chances of landing Mbeumo, it has been reported elsewhere that United remain optimistic about signing the Cameroon from Brentford.
Talks remain ongoing between the Old Trafford outfit and the London club to finalise the next steps. The total fee Brentford are asking for is said to sit at around £65 million, and United are close to that valuation.
The main sticking point remains the payment structure. Brentford want most, if not all, of the fee paid up front, which is still being negotiated between the clubs.
Mbeumo is keen on the move and has already agreed on personal terms in principle. United hope to complete the deal in time for the forward to join their preseason tour of the United States in late July.
