Manchester United waltzed through Brendan Rodger’s Leicester City side, thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

The Northern Irish boss, however, was left disgruntled by the official’s decision regarding Marcel Sabitzer’s challenge on Wout Faes.

Despite controlling the majority of the first period, Leicester City failed to capitalise on their dominance and were met with a phenomenal David de Gea stop on multiple occasions.

The home outfit would have been eager to end first-half proceedings as quickly as possible, as Leicester—spurred on by captain James Maddison—piled on the pressure.

The Austrian midfielder caught defender Wout Faes on the knee with a slightly late challenge but was not cautioned by the man in the middle Stuart Attwell. The Video Assistant Referee system also saw no problems with the incident and reported back to Attwell to resume play as normal.

Things changed trajectory after the break as Erik ten Hag’s team talk seemed to flip this tale on its head. Marcus Rashford caused more problems and doubled his tally, and after some deliberation, the goal was awarded after fears it would be chalked offside. Half-time substitute Jadon Sancho was impactful in the entirety of his cameo and got his goal when he extended Manchester United’s lead to 3-0.

Both Gary Neville and Graham Souness gave their two pennies worth during the half-time interval but differed in opinion. The former Manchester United defender deemed a yellow card the necessary outcome, whereas Souness believed the challenge deserved an early exit for Sabitzer.

Following his side’s disheartening shortfall at Old Trafford, Rodgers said in the post-match press conference: “It’s a sending off. Straight-legged onto the knee, how it wasn’t looked at is incredible.”

Should Sabitzer have been shown red in the dying moments of the first half, the second half may have had a different storyline. One thing is for certain, though, is that Rodgers is unhappy with how the incident was handled, and his red-faced comments show his disapproval of the official’s game-defining decision.

Manchester United inch closer to the top of the table as the three points at home now put them a mere five points behind league leaders Arsenal.
