Brazil have confirmed that Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has pulled out of their squad for upcoming international fixtures due to an injury.

Casemiro, 32, was expected to play for United in the FA Cup against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

However, on Saturday evening, it was reported that the former Real Madrid midfielder was replaced in the upcoming Brazil squad due to an unspecified injury.

A statement from the Brazilian Football Confederation read: “The coach of the Brazilian team, Dorival Júnior, announced, this Saturday, the call-up of striker Pepê, from Porto.

“He was called up to replace Casemiro, from Manchester United, who was cut due to injury and is out of the friendlies against England and Spain, on March 23 and 26, respectively.”

Casemiro was injured earlier this season between October and January, and it now appears that he has received another setback.

Erik ten Hag could look to start the returning Mason Mount, who will be back in the squad for the first time on Sunday.

Speaking on the England international, Ten Hag said: “I’m convinced he will be [a key player]. He hasn’t had a chance to prove this yet, but he will be a very good player for Manchester United.”

Casemiro has played 21 times this season for United, scoring five goals and registering two assists.

United’s clash against Liverpool kicks off at 3:30pm (UK time) on Sunday afternoon, broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX.
