Brazilian goalkeeper reveals Manchester United interest before double signing
Manchester United signed two goalkeepers last summer as André Onana and Altay Bayındır joined the English club.
After David de Gea and Dean Henderson both departed Old Trafford, it was obvious that United would need to make those additions.
Onana, 27, became the first-choice option quickly after signing from Inter Milan. He had a difficult debut campaign but showed his qualities in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Bayındır has not really been offered an opportunity, having made only one appearance for the club during the 2023/24 season.
The Reds could’ve signed a range of backup goalkeepers, and it appears that Brazilian shot-stopper Matheus was one of the players being considered.
The Braga no.1 has been at the Portuguese club since 2014 but explained that he received interest from a variety of clubs last summer, including Erik ten Hag’s side.
Matheus told O Jogo: “There was interest from Nottingham Forest last season, but the chairman thought it would be better if I stayed.
“There were a few that never got going. Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Nice and some from Brazil. None were finalised because the time wasn’t right.”
United’s goalkeeper situation has been a topic of hot debate over the last 12 months after Onana’s difficult start to life between the Old Trafford sticks.
However, many believe that the Cameroon goalie will be able to display his abilities more if Ten Hag’s team are able to dominate games more.
Last term, Onana regularly faced 20 or more shots against his goal per game and was not able to utilise his excellent ball-playing abilities nearly enough.
