Bizarre report claims Manchester United will bid for new goalkeeper ‘today’

A rather bizarre new report claims that Manchester United will bid for a new goalkeeper on Tuesday, although the motive for why is unclear.

Last summer, Manchester United signed two new goalkeepers following the permanent departures of David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

With only Tom Heaton remaining, Erik ten Hag chose to bring in former Inter Milan shot-stopper André Onana and Turkish international Altay Bayındır across the summer transfer window as he looked to advance his new style of play at Old Trafford.

However, this did not quite work out as hoped, with early poor performances and mistakes from Onana causing United to exit the Champions League before Christmas, although he turned a corner during 2024 and became one of the club’s most consistent players.

Onana played every fixture across all competitions bar one last season, meaning that Bayındır only got to show his skills once, during a 4-2 win over Newport Country in the FA Cup in January.

There have since been reports that Bayındır may leave United this summer following his lack of game time, with the 26-year-old wanting game time as he approaches the prime years of his career – although there have been statements denying such reports, with Bayındır himself displaying no clear behaviours that indicate he is a player who wants to leave this summer.

Therefore, a new report from journalist Sacha Tavolieri about a bid for a new goalkeeper this summer seems rather bizarre.

The information states that United will submit a bid to Genoa today (Tuesday) for 26-year-old keeper Josep Martínez, who is their first-choice No. 1.

According to the information provided, United are “expected to formulate” an official offer for the goalkeeper and make their interest in him concrete – it has been previously indicated that Genoa want around £17 million for him this summer.

With Onana integral to United, it seems odd that they would bid so much money for a player who will undoubtedly be second-choice while also having to get rid of Bayındır.

However, it is important to note that Inter Milan are also heavily interested in Martínez, meaning this report could be nothing more than a tactic from Genoa to try and get the Serie A giants to make their bid.
