“Best in the world…” – Harry Amass reveals two world-class defenders he models his game on

Manchester United youngster Harry Amass has revealed that he has modelled his game on two world-class left-backs of past and present.

Manchester United’s decision to loan Harry Amass to Sheffield Wednesday at the start of the season raised plenty of eyebrows.

The Championship side have faced major financial turmoil under their former owner, with players and staff suffering delayed wages.

After Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration last month and subsequently exited, Wednesday now sit bottom of the table with a negative points total following sanctions.

Despite the chaos, Amass’ spell has been largely positive. The highly rated defender has started all 12 league matches since his arrival, completing the full 90 minutes in the last 11, and netting his first professional goal against Southampton earlier this month.

Amass reveals two world-class defenders he models his game on

Amass’ performance in the Steel City Derby on the weekend was the only positive for Wednesday as they lost 3-0. The United loanee performed excellently despite the result.

Before that game, the 18-year-old spoke to the Championship side’s media team after being asked questions from supporters.

One of those questions was whether Amass had modelled his game on any players and he revealed two top names he has tried to emulate.

“I’d say I model it now on Nuno Mendes,” the teenager began. “Because he’s probably the best left-back in the world in my opinion.

“And in the past, I’d probably say Ashley Cole.”

Mendes, currently at Paris Saint-Germain, won the Champions League last season and locked up some of the best wingers in world football during that run, while also offering some brilliant offensive play.

Meanwhile, Cole is arguably the best left-back in Premier League history and one of the first to provide that kind of attacking threat in England.

Amass can challenge at United next season

Amass impressed United fans during his cameos in the back-end of last season but it was the right decision to send him on loan to get consistent minutes.

Wednesday’s struggles are not impacting him at the moment. “I’ve not let it effect me,” he added when asked how he’s handled coming into a club in administration.

“I think I’ve just come in to enjoy my football, be part of the team and try and get results. All of the other stuff, I don’t really let it effect the way I play or think, nothing really matters when you’re on the pitch.”

The experiences he is getting in the Championship will be valuable for him to push forward and properly challenge for a position at Old Trafford next season.
